OJOS DEL SALADO SKY RACE 2023

This November

23-28^th the Ojos del Salado Sky Race will return for its second

edition. The start line is at 5200m. The finish line almost a vertical mile

higher on the 6893m summit of the world´s highest volcano.

The race takes

place on Ojos del Salado (The Eye of the Salt Flats), above Chile´s Atacama

Desert.

On the four

days before the race you’ll explore the wickedly rugged volcanic trails of the

driest place on the planet. During this time, we´ll complete your

acclimatisation with trail adventures past wild flocks of flaxen-coloured

guanaco and the infamous Andean wind-sculpted sheaths of ice known, as

penitentes. 

Whilst at

basecamp by evening, at the 4000m turquoise lagoon, Laguna Verde, our chef will

ensure you eat well and rest in the open-air hot springs.

On summit day,

if you are strong and well enough acclimatised, you will climb to the roof of

the Atacama and the summit of the second highest peak outside of the Himalayas.

2023 will be the 115th race organised by Chilean trail event company Latitud Sur.

When:

From Thursday,

November 23 to Tuesday, November 28, both dates inclusive.

 Requirements:

Have proven

experience in high mountain environments, with successful summit attempts above

4,500m to 5,000m.

No pre-existing

medical condition that would affect you at altitude.

Mandatory

pre-race medical check to be presented on first day of event.

General Program:

Thursday 23 /

2:00 p.m.: Transfer from Mall Plaza Copiapó to Laguna Verde 4300m

 Friday 24:

Acclimatization and trekking around Laguna Verde, Termas Rústicas area.

Saturday 25:

Ascent of Mulas Muertas Hill 5,323m

Sunday 26:

Trekking from Atacama Refugio 5,250m to Telos Refugio 5,820m

Monday 27: Race

day from Atacama Refugio to Ojos del Salado Volcano Summit

Tuesday 28:

Return day to Copiapó. Or contingency race day (weather dependent). In the event

of race being run today, the return to Copiapó will be on Wednesday 29th.
